Happy New Year!

New year, new music, new revelations, new ideas, new love, new growth. Time is a beautiful thing. Although it is only relevant in this plane of existence of eternity, it allows us to live in renewed life and grace with each passing second, minute, day, week, month, year. Think about it: there are 86,400 seconds, 1440 minutes, and 24 hours in just 1 day. Its such an overwhelming thought, that I don’t accept the notion that we don’t [...]

After delaying the inevitable, I finally mustered enough time and emotional energy to watch the highly acclaimed film, Precious. And after watching the film, a Netflix subscriber’s comment summarized my sentiments almost perfectly:

I have two primary questions about this film: Question one, why did blacks hate it? Was it because it portrayed a black girl being raped twice by her father and conceiving two of his children, while her crack-ho mama tried to drop a TV from three floors above [...]

I heard this song last night on my ride from the city of Baltimore to the city of DC while listening to The Latin Flavor on 89.3 WPFW. I was so excited and utterly amazed at the rhythmic precision and layer that this pianist added to the piece, so telling a great latin jazz musician. And during my listen, the age old question popped into my head: is the piano a percussive instrument, string, both or neither. The mechanics of [...]

Message from Fiona Apple:

Doing music has been a vehicle to make the friends I have made…what ends up being more important to me than any other aspect to me is when I’m singing and playing or just singing and I’m playing with people, and I’ve got such great people around me all the time, it’s really the only time ever, when I just effortlessly am not thinking of anything…I’m not thinking about anything, you know, its that whole thing that [...]

Evil is the exercise of power:
1. to intentionally harm people psychologically
2. hurt people physically
3. destroy people/ideas mortally
4. commit crimes against humanity

- Philip Zimbardo

This past year, I have taken a sobering note of all the upheaval and calamity happening in our world – from the forest fires, earthquakes, and political unrest in the Middle East and North Africa to the nuclear scare. In addition to the outside world, this semester I am only taking one class: Wills, Trust, and Estates. My reading consist of cases about people who, in anticipating their end, write a document or make promises to devise their property. In [...]

“The problem is that a person, I see this is a lot of people that come to me, for instance for advice “should they go ahead” and so on, that they they tend to approximate the product, rather than attacking it in a realistic true way at any elementary level, regardless of how elementary, but it must be entirely true and entirely real and entirely accurate – they would rather approximate the entire problem than to take a small part [...]

Its been a long time since signing on and posting fresh thoughts and tunes. Like last year, I would like to start off this new year with some words of wise living that was forwarded to me in an e-mail:

Taken (and condensed) from Words of Wisdom & Living Blog

* These are words from Colin Powell’s Leadership series.

Lesson 1: “Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off”
Good leadership involves responsibility to the welfare of the group, which means that some people [...]

Classic song, compelling video.
